welcome back. today at the national press club several former air force officials are set to unveil information about several alleged ufo sights. roby chavez got an account of the top secret documents now being released. >> they were seeing strange lights in the sky. >> reporter: robert worried aliens have their eyes on our nuclear weapons. the minute man launch officer remembers one morning early in march of 1967 while on duty. several in the military witnessed unexplained lights in the sky in montana. >> very brightened guard called me and said they were looking

7:25 am
only my incident but maybe hundreds of others at military facilities. >> reporter: salas said it was a ufo with a message. >> i just think it was a message, but to us, about the danger of nuclear weapons. other incidents were covered up, and it's high time the air force and the government opened up their files on ufo's. >> reporter: in washington, roby chavez, fox 5 news. democrats now responding to the republican's pledge to america. plus strong reaction to stephen colbert's visit to capitol hill last week. we'll break down the political headlines coming up. and as we take a live look outside at this rainy monday morning, we'll get the latest weather from tony and julie will be up with your traffic. it's all coming your way next. it's 7:25.
7:26 am
7:27 am
7:28 am
right here in this neighborhood, i grew up learning strong families and hard work means opportunity. and that starts with good schools. it's a tradition here in maryland-- and why in these tough times i've put education first. we've made record investments in our classrooms... doubled the number of charter schools... and we've frozen college tuition for four years in a row. and it's working. experts say we now have the number one schools in the nation. when it comes to expanding opportunity in every neighborhood, i know that we must do even better. 7:28. so it's monday morning and you're ready to go to work. we had a great weekend and then this is what you get. >> and you see this. >> so we're talking about traffic slowing and your mood. but here is the good news. you said it all last week, sir, we need the rain.
7:29 am
>> we do need the rain. you didn't say it like that. you weren't like we need the rain but -- >> you need to find the silver lining. >> temperatures comfortable. >> 74-degrees for a high. our average high is 75. so that's what we're looking at. but it's messy outside. tucker stepped outside a moment ago and said it's ugly and that's what it is. let's take a look at hd radar. we'll show you where the heaviest rainfall is. we're not seeing particularly heavy rain, but we have mist, we have fog, altogether it makes for a soupy mess outside. you can see to the north of the district, that's where most of the rainfall is right now. there are a couple of little pockets out there in reston, it looks like sterling getting some rain. out toward front royal as well, off to the east most areas are quiet at this moment. but this has been changing throughout the course of the morning and will continue to change through the course of the -- throughout the course of the day today.
7:30 am
let's take a look at our graphics and we'll show you the big picture radar as we can show you the precipitation continuing to move in from the south. so even though we are getting a break here and there at this hour, or this moment, there is more to come. it's going to be a rainy day. look at this heavy rain now in north carolina. now does that hold together like that and come through our area? i don't think so. but we've been talking about the possibility of rain through the course of the day and maybe even thunderstorms. temperatures are about where we should be. we are at -- it's actually now 67 degrees in washington. and temperatures in the 60s across most of the region. off to the east we do have temperatures in the low 70s. the forecast for washington for today looks like this: cloudy and cool, rain heavy at times, could be a thunderstorm or two this afternoon. high about 74 degrees. then for tonight, we'll see our lows overnight in the upper 60s
7:31 am
in town. mid and low 60s elsewhere. cloudy skies, rain does continue tonight. five-day forecast, tomorrow rain still into the morning. high tomorrow about 80 degrees and i think that rain dissipates by afternoon. wednesday partly cloudy and 75. thursday a good chance of more rain showers through the day on thursday. friday looks pretty good, mostly sunny and 74 degrees. that's the latest on what is happening with the weather. now let's get the latest on traffic with julie wright. busy commute on the highways. new accident to report in virginia. inner loop of the beltway at braddock, tieing up the left side of the highway. delays from the springfield interchange. on the inner loop, slow right now as you continue to work your way from silver spring toward 95 college park. that's where we had the crash tieing up the right side of the highway. outer loop slows leaving 95 to georgia. 95 and the bw both congested out of laurel. checking for an incident north of 29 north of the beltway.
7:32 am
in virginia, dale boulevard, gridlock traffic. northbound and the main line headed toward the occuquan. earlier accident cleared and the crash at route 1 and that accident moved to the shoulder. finding three 395, traffic low from the beltway toward the 14th street bridge with a few breaks along the way. that's a check of your fox 5 on- time traffic. our farms are far too independent on immigrant labor to pick our fruits and vegetables. the obvious answer is for us to stop eating fruits and vegetables. >> stephen colbert's showed his difficult humor. but not everybody was a fan of his visit to capitol hill to talk about immigration. joining us to talk about the hot topics, von johnson. let's start with that. we heard various responses from steny hoyer saying this was an embarrassment and others saying this is what is expected.
7:33 am
what did you think? >> i think it was washington theater at its best. we have gotten wrapped up in the political issue of immigration and this was a chance to call attention to it in a ways that never been done before. i've never seen so many cameras in the room and i thought it was wonderful. >> does it work to take that approach to this issue? >> i'm not sure what works. this is an issue that is such a hot-button for both republicans and democrats. everyone is staying away from it. republicans don't want to be seen as supporting anything that might help an immigrant. so i think in some ways it was a last-ditch effort to call attention to some that it is very important. there are serious undertones here but at a certain point you have to throw everything at it no matter what. >> it definitely packed the room. no doubt about that. how do you grade his performance? >> i thought it was wonderful. it was interesting to see if he was in character and there were other points when he was not in character. toward the end of the hearing
7:34 am
he was interested in people with no power and thought this particular group of workers is one of the most powerless in our country and that was very moving. i don't think that was the typical care acper that he normally portrays. but he didn't back down. i disagree with steny hoyer in thinking it was embarrassing. it's hard to imagine how a comedian like stephen colbert could be embarrassed. >> and the question is, what you just touched in, how do you feel the members of congress responded. >> they were very much in character too. the chairwoman of the subcommittee is a very even- handed and nice woman dealing with this issue for a while. and steven king who is the republican leader on that subcommittee has been trying to stop anything that would involve so-called amnesty or anything that would help immigrants. he's a border security guy and he played his role so i thought it worked out perfectly. >> the whole thing touches on the bigger issue when we talk
7:35 am
about the immigration issue and we have the dream act from last week. but what is the latest now? >> there is effort to try to bring it up again. the dream act is one of those smaller immigration issues that effect a smaller group of people. they are more sympathetic and undocumented students who want to go to college. the likelihood that anything will happen is slim. we all know that right now the members of congress are looking to get through the election and afterwards there will not be an appetite for a lot of talk. >> and then the republican pledge to america which we saw last week. obviously immigration is a part of that, though republicans say maybe not a big enough part of that. is there in-fighting among the ranks. >> there is not a lot of in- fighting but the question is how much emphasis do you push
7:36 am
on it. but i did notice the word "amnesty" does not appear. it does talk about border security and talks about national security so we're talking about terrorism, iran and iraq. and then local government. and that might be a very veiled way of endorsing arizona's tough immigration law but it's not a huge part of the republican pledge. >> it's interesting because when they first came out with the pledge, some of the responses and the support from republicans was look, look, at least we're putting something out there, a plan out there. but now it seems like the negative response comes from more conservative republicans saying well you put something out there, but maybe you didn't put enough. >> and that's going to be a dynamic we see going forward, especially if the republicans gain control of one or both chambers of the house. they'll have to -- there will be people on certain sides saying we need to push hearder on -- push harder on issues and
7:37 am
immigration is one of the issues. and i thought they had a lot of ideas typical of republicans but how far will they go. >> we'll find out one of these days. >> we'll see. >> exactly. fawn johnson, thank you very much for being with us. we have more for you. we have to talk about the redskins game yesterday. they lost two in a row. this one did not expect them to lose. so we'll play monday morning quarterback and find out what happened in st. louis yesterday. and looking forward to next week's matchup in philadelphia. 7:37 on this monday morning. blue diamond almonds!
7:38 am

mcnabb up the middle to moss, who loses the ball. and it's picked up and it's james butler. >> those are the one that's get you. redskins yesterday losing to the rams in st. louis. final score was 30-16. it was close until the fourth
7:41 am
quarter. the ram's first home victory in nearly a season. dave ross joins us to play monday morning quarterback. looking back, you get the feeling that play might have took the wind out of their sails. it came back but they didn't have the fight or energy throughout the full game. >> when you say 15 games for the reason, it's two seasons or eight home games and almost two full years and they get the first win. and we get to kicking around here and me and you and tucker and everybody down in the news room were talking about this, the redskins identity, what is it? the defense doesn't know what they are doing. if they are stopping the run, they can't stop the pass against the texans. and they have to figure out this week what they are going to do to stop this. and right now the defense is a siv. and they couldn't stop the run. and in the first possession steven jackson does this. goes to the side and breaks a
7:42 am
couple of tackles and springs to the left and he's gone, landry can't catch him and 7-0 setting the tone. and then it went from bad to worse. the redskins did come back, mcnabb was here in the roll to moss, kind of back in the game. but when you are always fighting an up-hill battle against inferior teams you can't have that happen. and again kenneth darby comes in. i love it when he did she blinded me with science. >> not even close. thomas dollbi. >> oh, sorry. the redskins loose. >> so here is the deal. we could talk about yesterday. i prefer not to because it wasn't pretty. but now you're in a position you didn't want to going into the meatier schedule. and if you need to create this
7:43 am
identity, what is it? because michael vick was coming off the best game he played in years yesterday. >> he looks like he has fresh legs and we're going to get to that. steve, you are right, what is the identity of this football game. i think it's donovan mcnabb. this is the reason you brought him. he has to take the bull by the horns this week and say this is my football team and that means getting chris davis or cooley and devon thomas on the field and i don't think they can pound the ball with portis, williams, i don't think they can do that. they do get back trent williams next week and that will make a difference. after the game donovan mcnabb discussed yesterday's tough, tough loss. >> it's very frustrating. very frustrating. we have a couple of good plays by santana and cooley and some run plays and guys are picking up big yards from ryan and clinton, so i mean, again, it's disturbing for us on the
7:44 am
offensive side because we're much better than what we showed today. >> red zone offense, a lot of field goals, not a lot of scores. you can see how frustrated he is, because he knows, as a veteran, if you look at the schedule, it doesn't get easier. and next week, michael vick. you have been watching how good he's playing. he's again with the fresh legs that we talked about. let's take a look at yesterday in jacksonville. and this is what the skins defense, which they haven't been able to stop anybody. >> last in the nfl right now. >> how do you stop this? this is a guy who has a big- time arm, and when you put it with the weapons that he has, that's jeremy maclin, and that's jackson going in for the score, they have a lot of speed but he can do it with his legs as well. so to be honest with you, you're really going to be scratching your head when watching film this week, how do you stop number 7. i think the redskins fans were praying that kevin kolb would be the starter, no they're going with vick and andy reid has made the
7:45 am
right decision. >> so the pressure on the redskins secondary because he's a great runner but you have to key on the pass. but at the same time, you have to think donovan mcnabb is going to be so stoked to go back and play in front of the philly fans. >> if there is one game that he circled, this is the one he circled. going back to philly. would like to get a win in philly next week. >> we would like the same thing. and our coverage continues on air and online. we have all of the details online at myfoxdc.com, just click on the sports tab. and while there, make sure to pick out our high school football game of the week. the voting is online. here is your choices for this week. any of those matchups, choose the one you like the best and give it a vote and go to myfoxdc.com, again on the sports tab. and now you can text the game
7:46 am
number to 55171. just the game number, one, two, three, four or five to 55171. >> text allison to 66818. no, everybody is getting the numbers to text. >> is that the in thing. >> you just heard our game of the week is now you can text. everything is the new technology. >> i got you. all right. let's take a look at regional temperatures. i didn't know everybody was doing it. >> not really. >> but i just stepped outside, oh, man, not pleasant. we're getting rain. it's cool, but it's comfortable as far as temperatures go. misty, foggy, yeah. 67 degrees in washington, d.c. in new york 65. roanoke 62. pittsburgh, pa at 59 degrees. you see the clouds over us and the precipitation coming through. a break in the precip during the next hour or so but then
7:47 am
more making its way in here. there is a lot to work with down to the south. we've seen a lot of lightning along the coast as well. so some thunderstorms, cannot rule out a severe or strong thunderstorm coming through here later on today. five-day forecast, high today 74 degrees. our average high of 75. a lot of rain, could be heavy at times. maybe some thunderstorms. rain continues into tomorrow morning. look for a high of 80 with a gradual ingf rainfall amount. wednesday, partly cloudy and 75. thursday more rain is likely; 78. and sunday 74. >> we'll be ready for the drier temperatures on the weekend. let's head over to julie wright. my dentures are slipping. let's see how things are working on the roadway. [ laughter ] >> that's why you're supposed to eat peanut butter in the morning. >> i guess so. wet pavement everywhere and that is causing major tie-ups on the beltway.

madame tussauds' d.c. is creating a $2 million u.s. presidential gallery that will house all of the 44 presidents. the gallery is set to open in early february. but you have been getting sneak peeks if you've been watching fox 5 morning news. joining us now with the latest president to come in studio is lisa mcclure from madame tussauds' d.c. and this is president grover cleveland. except he wasn't brother grover cleveland. his first name was steven. he was born march 18th and one of nine children. he was the son of a presbyterian minister. >> and he changed his name because he thought steven cleveland would be strange. is that what we think? the name would rhyme too much? >> i'm not exactly sure. but the most important thing about mr. cleveland is that he was -- had two terms, which is not unusual, but
8:50 am
nonconsecutive. so he actually was the 22nd and the 24th president of the united states. >> wow. he had other firsts. like he was the first president to get married in the white house. and what is special about his bride, which is interesting, because we say this is a very mature man who is president cleveland, but his wife was -- >> she was 21 years old. youngest first lady. he was 49 at the time. and during the second administration, he had a daughter esther and she's the only child to be born in the white house. now other interesting things about grover cleveland is he was actually the sheriff of erie county, new york and he hung two murderers in his administration. he had a quick term in the white house. in 1882 he was a mayor. in 1883 he was the governor of new york and in 1884 he became the president. and of course he also has great ties to washington, d.c. because during his summers at the white house it was very,
8:51 am
very hot and he actually selected a private little area in cleveland park, of course his name's sake, that he went to in the summers. after that he retired in new york and died in 1908. so allison, as you said, we have 23 other u.s. presidents right now at madame tussauds. we're at 10th and f. street in penn quarter. we're open at 10:00 every day of the year and we have another great special to tell you and your listeners about. ten pen 108s. we'll have a $5 ticket from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on october 20th. they may want to take a sneak peek at the serena's that came in and her birthday was yesterday and we celebrated that in great style. >> what a great opportunity. so the presidents won't be on display until february and then you can see mr. cleveland and all of his distinguished comrades that held that honor
